“I Turned The Character Into A Porn Star Post Sunny”

‘Erotica’, ‘unadulterated sensuality’ and ‘adult’… That’s how Pooja Bhatt is describing her next venture, Jism 2. Well, the film has been in the news from the very day producer Mahesh Bhatt approached international adult film star Sunny Leone to play leading lady. The Bhatts are so confident of their product that they didn’t need any hardsell. Just a week from the film’s release, here’s a candid chat with the feisty Pooja Bhatt.

On approaching Sunny Leone

I approached Sunny for a role way back in 2002 but things didn’t fall into place then. So, call it luck or what you will, but we were looking at the casting for Jism 2 and Maheshji wanted Mallika Sherawat or Bipasha Basu. But I was not satisfied because Bipasha dies in Jism and Mallika already had Murder. That’s when Sunny entered Bigg Boss and I knew who I wanted.

My husband reminded me about Sunny

There was so much speculation about whether Bipasha Basu or Mallika Sherawat would be cast in Jism 2. So I decided to launch a poster where the girl is completely covered. That’s when the buzz started around the film. Casting was a tough call, and my husband reminded me about Sunny Leone, who I thought of casting in Jism back in 2002. I called up Dino, my co-producer, and asked him to check her on the Internet. He did that and ‘no’.

After a few months, she was part of Bigg Boss. I was so mesmerised by her innocent face, she is very beautiful. So we took her on board. It was after Sunny came on board that I turned the character into a porn star.

Toilet humour is not my style

Jism 2 is an average film. It’s made from a male perspective and designed for a male audience. But I am going to show pure, unadulterated sensuality, designed by adults and for adults. Toilet humour is not my style. I leave toilet humour to other filmmakers.

Not a film for kids

I did not intend this film to be an elite product. I am catering to the man on the street. It is an erotic and sensual thriller. We applied for an A certificate because I was certain that I wanted A and not a U/A certification. I am not making the film for children, it’s an adult film for adult sensibilities. The adult audience is a sizeable and large enough for my film.

Censor Board

The censor board asked me to decrease the length of shots in four places or replace them. Three of these are in songs and one is a scene. One of them is the song, Yeh kasoor, which is already out on the Internet.  By saying that, I think they were being rather mature. I made the changes and felt it made my film more erotic. Other than that, they did not tamper with the dialogue or a single scene. I promise that apart from Jism, Jism 2 will be the most sensual film of our times.

Satellite not on my mind

I have made an erotic film and I am very clear about the 11 pm slot. I am not sure whether the Censor Board will accept the film for TV without any cuts. But I am not thinking about satellite rights right now. If they don’t accept it, I will look at the DTH market and a few other options.

Jism 2 is different from Jism

Jism 2 over-delivers in terms of the concept and story. People are only talking about Sunny Leone and the show of skin. I received the same reaction before Jism in 2002 but when the movie released, audiences loved it and changed their perception of it. I am sure the same will happen with Jism 2.

Will you make a comeback to acting?

(Smiles) I only miss acting when I am shouting for the perfect shot, props and lights. I feel, “Why can’t I just be on the sets and be told what to do?” But I never did quit acting. If there’s a role suited to my age, which is 40, I will definitely take it. But the script will have to appeal me. Frankly, I don’t think thee is an adrenaline rush quite like the one you get when directing.

Will we see Alia-Pooja Bhatt working together?

Alia is a brilliant kid and is making her debut this year. And, yes, I want to make Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahi with her because she is quite similar to me. But this film will happen only if Ranbir Kapoor says ‘yes’. I think he is the best fit for Aamir Khan’s character.
