Electrifying!

Ishaqzaade :
Banner: Yash Raj Films
Label: YRF Music
Music Director: Amit Trivedi
Lyrics: Kausar Munir, Habib Faisal

Ishaqzaade opens marvelously with the evocative notes of a horn, setting the mood for a mesmerising romantic number. Amit Trivedi ropes in mainstream singers like Javed Ali and Shreya Ghoshal to render this mellow ballad.

Ali, who takes centre-stage for most parts of this number, is particularly soulful. The lyrics by Munir express the joys of first love endearingly. Ishaqzaade is a superb beginning for the soundtrack and raises expectations from the album.

In Chokra jawaan (Vishal Dadlani, Sunidhi Chauhan), Trivedi deftly fuses a brass band and drums with traditional folk sounds to create a delightful desi dance number. Structured like a jugalbandi with Sunidhi and Vishal ribbing each other, this item number is packed with energy and an infectious rhythm. The singers are outstanding. It also helps that Habib Faisal’s lyrics are refreshingly fun.

Shalmali Kholpade is the star of this soundtrack and her rendition of Pareshan is fantastic! Her voice is a dazzling mix of naiveté and sensuality. Also full credit to Trivedi for trusting her with an outstanding composition that does justice to her talent. This romantic song often threatens to burst into a full-fledged grunge rock track, and teases and swerves right back into the soft, dreamy space. The brilliant use of the harmonium and Munir’s lyrics are the other highlights of this gorgeous song.

Shreya Ghoshal is pitch-perfect in her rendition of Jhalla wallah, getting the nuances pat and conveying the right playfulness. The lyrics by Kausar Munir are a scream – clever and funny! In the same space as Kajre re (Bunty Aur Babli), in terms of feel and mood, this desi nautanki number packs a wallop too. The last song, Aafaton ke parinde (Suraj Jagan, Divya Kumar), displays Trivedi’s brilliance yet again. He plays with a darker genre of electronic music, Dubstep and lays Jagan’s scruffy vocals on it. The result is a feisty, addictive track. The soundtrack of Ishaqzaade is innovative and electrifying! A must-buy.

Verdict: Superb
