There were four releases this week – Ragini MMS, Love U… Mr. Kalaakar!, Stanley Ka Dabba and Shagird, all of them like chalk and cheese. Opening collections were highest for paranormal thriller Ragini MMS, and although Stanley Ka Dabba has been appreciated by the elite audience, word of mouth is expected to enhance its prospects.
In keeping with this trend, Mumbai distributor Rajesh Thadani says Ekta Kapoor’s Ragini MMS was ahead of the other three releases. “The opening collection of Ragini MMS was 30 to 40 per cent. The other three releases have not been up to the mark.” about last week’s releases, Haunted and Luv Ka The End, Thadani adds, “The 3D version of Haunted continues to do decent business and is better than the 2D version. The collections of Luv Ka The End have been average.”
Delhi distributor Sanjay Ghai says that except for Stanley Ka Dabba, none of the other new releases has taken a great opening. “Stanley Ka Dabba opened to 100 per cent collections, thanks to block bookings by schools and colleges. Also, the film has been appreciated for its content and entertainment value. It’s been a long time since we’ve had a good children’s film that is also a wholesome family entertainer. The film will further pick up by word-of-mouth publicity. But Ragini MMS and Love U… Mr Kalaakar! opened poorly. Though released in only a few cinemas, I have heard that Shagird is not all that a bad film. In fact, I have got positive feedback on the storyline of this venture.”
Ghai adds that Haunted, in its second week, continues to do good business. “Luv Ka… the end ho gaya!” he laughs.
According to CP distributor Saagar Chandok, “The collections of all four films – Love U… Mr Kalakaar!, Ragini MMS, Shagird and Stanley Ka Dabba – have been about eight to ten per cent. I think the collections of Ragini MMS have been slightly better – about 15 to 20 per cent. The collections of Shagird have not been all that great. As far as last week’s releases are concerned, both Haunted and Luv Ka The End continue to do average business at the box office.”
Kolkatta distributor Moni Venkatesh says, the ongoing elections have marred the opening collections of all four new releases. “A true picture of the box-office collections will emerge during the weekend.”
In Punjab, distributor Surendra Saluja pegs the opening collections of all four releases at 15 to 20 per cent. “Haunted has managed to sustain itself,” he adds.
In Assam, Ragini MMS enjoyed a ‘decent’ opening. According to distributor Siddharth Goenka, “The film has generated a certain degree of curiosity here. The collections of Shagird and Love U… Mr Kalakaar! are not known as yet. Stanley Ka Dabba has not been released here.” Now, the trade here has their hopes pinned on Salman Khan-starrer Ready. “There is already a lot of buzz around this film and it is expected to turn the tide.”
