A Hinglish film, Love You To Death is about four individuals in a family who lead separate lives in spite of living under the same roof. It’s a film revolving around Soniya, played by Yuki Ellias, young, pretty and a wealthy woman, not to forget her obsession for her dog, Baby. Soniya’s husband Atul, played by Chandan Roy Sanyal, loves only money while her mother-in-law (Suhasini Muley) is a lover of video games and is only interested in her daughter-in-law’s money. Soniya’s father (Kallol Banerjee), who writes poetry and is a wildlife lover, decides to stay away from all of this.
The story is about Atul wanting all the property his wife possesses. Atul also has a chance to expand his defence business along with a Russian arms dealer and he wants Soniya to invest in the deal. But Soniya meets John, a nature lover who manufactures solar panels, and decides to invest all her money in his project. The first attempt to kill Soniya results in her dog’s death. The latter half of the film includes another unsuccessful plan to kill her and what happens next forms the crux of the film.
Instead of being a laugh-riot, the film is slow and all the characters are lost in their own space. It also drags in some places. The screenplay is sketchy and even the dialogue (barring a few scenes) fails to evoke any laughter.
Director Rafeeq Elias impresses in few sequences that are nicely handled, but that’s about it. Cinematography is all right.
Performance-wise, Chandan Roy Sanyal is entertaining to some extent. However, Yuki Ellias fails to impress. Kallol Banerjee as the father is funny. Suhasini Mulay as the mother-in-law is average. Sheeba Chadha as the tarot card reader delivers a decent performance. The rest of the actors are not convincing.
Verdict: Dud
