The Cleveland International Film Festival (CIFF) this year is all about ‘Embrace Curiosity’. The focus is on the inquisitive nature of the festival, its artistes and more than 100,000 attendees, who are expected for the 12-day event.

The festival provides unique opportunities for people to explore other cultures and ideas so as to challenge, and in the process, change the ways we interact with the world around us. Around 200 feature films and 200 short films from nearly 70 countries will be showcased at CIFF. Over 300 guest filmmakers will be in attendance to share their talent with the audience.

Five movies which showcase India are being screened at the festival. Feature films Newton and In The Shadows, and the documentary Ask The Sexpert, are all part of the Pan-Asian cinema section.

In the Shadows, directed by Dipesh Jain is a psychological drama about a man trapped within city walls and in his own mind. Newton is about a novice government clerk who is sent on election duty to a Naxalite-infested town, in the jungles of Chhattisgarh. A stickler for rules, Newton puts in all his efforts to conduct the elections despite facing numerous obstacles. The movie is directed by Amit V Masurkar.

Two movies, Period. End Of Sentence and Bagheera, are featured as part of the Shorts Program.

The Drummer And The Keeper

Written and directed by Nick Kelly, the film is about a drummer, Gabriel from an up-and-coming rock band. Due to his unpredictable behaviour and drinking binges, he is forced to see a therapist, where he discovers that he is bipolar. Gabriel is required to undergo treatment which includes joining a soccer team with other mental health patients. Reluctant at first, he forges a friendship with Christopher, who is suffering from Asperger’s syndrome. What seems like a tragic relationship ends up being a journey of self-discovery which gives them both the pieces they’ve been missing in their lives.

Borg Vs McEnroe

The movie, set as a sports drama, is a psychological thriller that recreates the 1980 Wimbledon Championship match between tennis greats Björn Borg and John McEnroe, as well as the media frenzy surrounding it and the private anguish experienced by the players and those around them. Helmed by Danish director Janus Metz, the film features performances by Sverrir Gudnason, Shia LaBeouf, and Stellan Skarsgärd.
