Sajid Khan returns with Housefull 2, a sequel to his madcap comedy Housefull, which released in 2010. Though panned by critics, the star-studded original raked in some serious moolah. This time around, the cast is bigger and if the promos are any indication, the gags more asinine. Khan replaces his regular composers Shankar Ehsaan Loy (Heyy Baby, Housefull) with Sajid-Wajid. Surprisingly, the album has only four original songs along with a couple of remixes.
Papa toh band bajaye (Neeraj Sridhar) is incredibly catchy. Although startlingly similar to We no speak Americano (Yolanda Be Cool & DCUP), Papa makes for an immensely enjoyable party number. The clarinet hook and Neeraj Sridhar’s enthusiastic rendition add to the overall appeal of this fun song. However, Sameer’s lyrics are ludicrous – who writes drivel like ‘Idiot ho, tum gadhe ho, abhi tumhe knowledge nahin hain’?
Anarkali disco chali (Mamta Sharma, Sukhwinder Singh) has chartbuster written all over it. Fashioned along the lines of desi dance tracks like Kajra re (Bunty Aur Babli), this disco mujra works big time due to some lively singing by Mamta Sharma (sounding a lot like Hema Sardesai) and Sukhwinder Singh! But a word of advice for Sukhwinder – please do not sing in English!
Though the composers overdo the auto tune effect on Wajid’s vocals, Right now now (Wajid Khan, Suzanne D’Mello, Sunidhi Chauhan) works as a leisurely filmi hip-hop song that’s engaging while it lasts. Sunidhi Chauhan, however, is criminally underutilised in this one.
It’s been a while since we heard Shaan sing a full-blown romantic track in a big-budget flick. He is charming in his rendition of Do you know, a duet with Shreya Ghoshal. And in spite of the super-cheesy lyrics, the singers make this breezy romantic track enjoyable.
The soundtrack of Housefull 2 is surprisingly entertaining. Let’s hope the film is too.
