Commando: A One Man Army

Vidyut Jamwal, the leading man of the action-thriller Commando, is being touted as the next big action star. And going by the death-defying stunts, glimpses of which can be seen in the promos, one would say, rightly so! When action is the USP of a film, one doesn’t quite expect much from its soundtrack.

Debutant music director Mannan Shaah bowls you over completely with the opening track Saawan bairi (Rahat Fateh Ali Khan). Shaah, erstwhile assistant to Pritam, skillfully mixes traditional elements with electronic sounds to create a haunting, romantic number. Khan is exquisite in his rendition, conveying soul and romance in his voice. This one’s a winner!

Lutt jawan opens interestingly, with a mash-up of tribal sounds and Dhruv Sangari’s captivating voice before it settles into what can be best described as a Punjabi techno number. The song has an easy, cool groove and the chorus is catchy, making it a decent listen.

Lena dena is a full-blown Punjabi Bhangra number with Daler Mehndi at the helm. Though Mehndi is at his enthusiastic best, the composition is disappointingly mediocre. Mungda (Sunidhi Chauhan) is a take-off on Usha Mangeshkar’s hit number from the retro flick Inkaar. Though the song lacks a strong melody, Shaah embellishes this item number with some catchy percussion and a fun chorus. Chauhan adds the extra zing with her saucy rendition.

Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s magnificent Saawan bairi is the only bright spot in an otherwise ordinary album.

Verdict: Routine stuff.
