Sooraj Barjatya’s musical Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! that released in 1994 turned 25 recently. It became one of the most loved films over the years. Renuka Shahane who played Pooja in it became the nation’s most favourite didi. Her congenial personality and the popular Didi tera devar deewana made her a household name.

A screening of the film to mark its 25 years was recently held in South Mumbai. The event was graced by Renuka, Salman Khan, Madhuri Dixit Nene, Sooraj Barjatya, Mohnish Bahl, Bindu and Satish Shah among others.

Team Box Office India recently caught up with Renuka who nostalgically looked back at the classic and the silver jubilee celebration of the film.

She said, “It was a complete nostalgia trip for me. It was so beautifully organised. It brought back so many memories. It was truly wonderful. I was so glad that everyone had come. Only Anupamji, Alokji and Dilip Joshi weren’t there. I missed Reemaji and Lakshya (Laxmikant Berde). I was very close to both of them. I wasn’t as close to Ajitji (Vachani) but I missed him too.”

Talking about how much the film is special to her, she said, “Salman and Madhuri have done so many films after Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! but this film was a special memory for both of them. I toh have not even done so much work, so you can imagine how special it is for me! My character in the film was like a ‘once in a lifetime role’ for me.”

She added, “In Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!, I played a bhabhi for the best people and worked with the best people.”

Renuka also spoke about how the film continues to live in our hearts. “Not everybody gets to make a name and a place in people’s hearts because of the things they’ve done. I feel eternally grateful that I got a film like Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!. Even 25 years later, I keep meeting children who are as young as 10 and they’ve watched the film on Zee Cinema umpteen times.”
