On The Fast Track With Slow motion

As his latest song Slow motion from Bharat tops the charts this summer, singer Nakash Aziz talks to Joanne D’Silva about this magnum opus project

It’s that time of year when we see superstar Salman Khan on the silver screen and, this Eid, fans cannot wait for his upcoming film Bharat, especially with excitement building thanks to the amazing songs from the film. The first track that released, Slow motion, is already a chartbuster and singer Nakash Aziz tells us how he got on board for this foot-tapping number. “It always starts when the composer calls you for the song, they think you are right, and this time too, Mr Vishal Dadlani called me to his studio. I listened to the song and I recorded it,” he says.

Asked about his equation with the musical duo, Vishal-Shekhar, Aziz says, “They are very cool and it is fun to watch their music creation process. When I was growing up, I used to listen to their songs a lot and I definitely admire their work. They are amazing guys and it is fun to work with music composers who have been in the industry for such a long time.”

The song also has the vocals of Shreya Ghoshal, and Aziz says he is honoured to be a part of a track with a singer like her, among the other big names that are attached to Slow motion. “In today’s time, both singers don’t usually record the song together. But I am honoured to share the platform with Shreya Ghoshal because she is such a phenomenal singer. It was also an honour to work with such great talents like the director, Ali Abbas Zafar, Salman Khan and Disha Patani. Also, Vishal-Shekhar, Shreya Ghoshal, Irshad Kamil sahab and Meghdeep Bose, who has arranged and produced the track Slow motion,  all are so talented So, I am really grateful to be a part of this team.”

This is not the first time Aziz has lent his voice to Khan. “I think singing a song is a fantastic thing and when you are going to sing for Salman Khan, the song will be viewed by millions. And, of course, you automatically get that entire fan base and don’t want to disappoint those fans because they have certain expectations. So, I always try to bring my ‘A’ game every time I step inside a studio. I felt happy when I heard that the track was for Bharat because it is for one of the biggest films of the year.”

Going back to when he was still in talks for the song, Aziz shares the brief he was given in the beginning. “Basically, this is a celebration song and the song itself is self-explanatory. And, I just had to sing the words and emote. Vishal-Shekhar definitely made me very comfortable and made my life much easier.”

The singer also confesses that sometimes, as a composer, he gets to read scripts to get a feel of the music that the film requires. “We do read the scripts if we get the time. Otherwise, the directors are good with narrations. And, as a composer, I have not done a lot of music for movies.”

Every artiste has a wish-list of people they would like to work with and Aziz shares his. “I want to collaborate with almost everyone who is doing music and who is looking for excitement in their lives. It is difficult to choose one individual but I’m fortunate to have worked with many great composers like Pritam da, Vishal- Shekhar, Amit Trivedi and I have to yet sing for Vishal Bhardwaj and Shankar Mahadevan.”

On his upcoming projects, he reveals, “I have composed a song for a movie called Badnam Gali, which is going to release on Zee5.”
