Punjabi music sensation Guru Randhawa talks to Komal Sharmaabout his new version of Suit in the upcoming film Hindi Medium
How did T-Series approach you for this song?
I had collaborated with T-Series and we made this Suit suit kartasong, which got popular very quickly. It is played everywhere, even at international clubs. We were very happy that everyone loved the song so much and now you can hear and feel it in the film Hindi Medium. For this film, I got a call from Bhushan sir and he said he needed the song. He didn’t tell me much about the film then.
So what brief did Bhushan Kumar give you?
I wasn’t told very much about the situation but I got a chance to watch the film and I had to change the words and update the song according to the demands of the situation. Since this song is played everywhere, I needed to add something new to it.
What’s new in this song?
I have made a few changes in the lyrics, like I used words like ‘chandani chowk’ in the song because Irrfan Khan has a shop called Chandani Chowk in the film. Secondly, I had to remove my name as we are independent singers who use our own names in our songs. So I had to replace my name with another word.
What was it like to work with Irrfan?
I was very excited when I learnt that Irrfan was playing the lead character because I was getting to work with an actor who represents our India internationally.
Did you face any challenges while working on this project?
Yes, there were many. Here, you have to sync with so many teams, like T-Series has their own team, and the producer and the director have their own briefs. Also, you have to make your song suit the characters. So I merged everything and did it my way. Bhushan sir liked my song in the first go. I didn’t have to work all that hard because I believe that the song, which is already a hit, would lose its charm if I made too many changes.
What is the major difference between Punjabi songs and Hindi songs?
Punjabi songs are not situational. We don’t have to target anyone. So we choose the songs we think can be hits and release them on our own. Basically, we are independent. Most singers in Hollywood too are independent. But in Hindi films, they will not consider your song if it doesn’t suit the situation.
What is the USP of your songs?
The USP of my songs are the hook lines, which are actually pretty simple and which all of us use in our daily lives. For example, my friend told me that – ‘This suit suits you well.’ this song clicked right there and I named it Tainu suit suit karda.
What kind of response are you getting?
I am hoping this version gets the same response as the older one received. I believe Hindi cinema will help me reach out to a wider audience and get me where I want to go since you get to collaborate with so many actors, production houses, directors etc. So if they don’t like this version, that is also fine with me. I will make another song.
