It’s All ‘OK’

Nakash Aziz is ecstatic about being asked to croon for the just released OK Jaanu

Nakash Aziz has had a fantastic journey from composer to singer, and has assisted musical maestro A R Rahman on projects such as Delhi 6, Highway, Raanjhaanaa and Rockstar. Hailing from a family of singers, Aziz has bagged some big-budget films to croon in the recent past, such as Housefull 3, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and the recently released OK Jaanu.

On singing for OK Jaanu, Aziz says, “I have been associated with A R Rahman Sir for over eight years. Sir has been very kind to me and keeps calling me for any work. I don’t know why he selected me for this particular song but I believe I just got lucky.”

On the brief given for Sajan aayo re, he says, “I had heard this song before in O Kadhal Kanmani and so I was familiar with the situation. All I had to do was go to the studio and dub. It was obviously complicated, but singing for Rahman Sir is always a big opportunity for any singer. It always feels like a dream working for him, Working for him is always a learning experience because you always have to up your game.”

Aziz’s journey in Bollywood was not without its ups and downs. “It has been like anyone else’s journey. But I have been very fortunate to get the songs that I did. I owe a lot to Pritam Da, for believing in me, and I believe he’s been instrumental in shaping my career. He has been a great friend and a great mentor and has always guided me correctly.

“My parents have also supported me wholeheartedly. It is very important for every child who wants to make a career in music, to have their parents’ support and encouragement, especially in a career where success is not guaranteed. I have met some really good artistes and managed to make a few friends in Bollywood as well,” he says.

According to Aziz, working in the South is no different from working in Bollywood. “The difference is only in language and the composers. The rest, the music, is the same. As a singer, I completely submit myself to the composer and try to understand what their idea is.”

On being both a composer and a singer, he remarks, “I want to fit into every role. I don’t want to limit myself to just one aspect of music. Music is a wholesome experience and I offer my inputs wherever required. I like both roles, they are different but I enjoy them both. “

What about future projects? “I don’t like discussing my future projects as I am very superstitious. I keep doing good work and that’s all.”
