Karthik Calling Karthik

The talented trio Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy (SEL) have never disappointed when they’ve composed the tunes for a Farhan Akhtar film, whether Dil Chahta Hai, Don or more recently Rock On!!. So there are certain expectations from this album even before you hear it. Add lyricist Javed Akhtar to the mix and the anticipation only grows.

Hey ya (Clinton Cerejo, Shankar Mahadevan and Loy Mendonsa) has an infectious groove that appeals almost instantly. Though the English lyrics are a tad cheesy, the tune certainly gets you going. Catchy and fun!

Uff teri ada (Shankar Mahadevan and Alyssa Mendonsa) is trademark SEL – hip and groovy. Alyssa, daughter of Loy Mendonsa, makes her debut with this song. Shankar adds a touch of classical flair to this track which contrasts beautifully with Alyssa’s stylised vocals. A funky dance track that will find a place at the disco!

Though KK does a good job with Jaane yeh kya hua, this soft number has nothing new to offer. Both the composition and lyrics are strictly average. And though Kaisi hai yeh udaasi feels like it’s a tune you’ve heard before, it’s the vocals by Kailash Kher and Sukanya Purayastha that compel you to give this song a patient hearing.

The title track, Karthik Calling Karthik (Shankar Mahadevan, Caralisa Monteiro, Malika Singh and Suraj Jaggan) is a slow and somewhat dark composition that works best in the context of the film. Karthik 2.0, a new-age music piece performed by Midival Punditz and Karsh Kale, doesn’t impress much either.

Verdict: Not SEL’s best – strictly average!
