Nivin Pauly takes on the title role of Kayamkulam Kochunni in the period action drama directed by Rosshan Andrrews. Written by Bobby & Sanjay, the story is based on the life of Kayamkulam Kochunni, the Robin Hood of Kerala, who robbed from the rich and gave to the poor during the British Raj in the early 19th century Central Travancore. Just as Robinhood had Little John, Kochunni had Ithikkarappakki. Veteran actor Mohanlal plays the role in an extended cameo in the film.
Set in AD 1830, the trailer begins with an announcement in the higher caste villages that Kochunni is coming. There are several shots of British attacks, battles, vast expanses of God's own country which finally lead to a close up shot of Nivin Pauly as Kochunni, staring probably at the enemy, rain drenching his face and his eyes filled with fury and bravery. The trailer then moves on to showing a young Kochunni, who wants to learn Kalari. But is refused may be due to his caste or religion. He then forms a friendship with a beautiful young woman, who seems to help him learn Kalari. Thus starts the his journey, from an ordinary man to the famous 'thief' who becomes a threat to the British Raj and its supporters.
This is followed by several scenes about oppression of 'shudras' by the 'brahmins', Kochunni's expressing his interest in marrying a 'shudra' girl and of course the introduction of Mohanlal. The actor lights up the last few seconds of the trailer. His demenaour is enchanting and at the same time, looks like his scenes with Nivin will be filled with drama and comedy.
Nivin Pauly seems to have gotten into the skin of the character. He sports a few different looks, each of which echo the state of mind of Kochunni at the point of time. Of course the actor is more than just his various looks. He has proved time and again that he can transform himself to the character he plays, and Kochunni should be no different. The actor seems have to have out in a lot of physical effort as well to prepare for this role. Binod Pradhan's camerawork and Gopi Sundar's background score definitely stand out in the trailer. This movie seems like a film to watch on the big screen, to experience the grandeur of the period as well as the action scenes.
Produced by Gokulam Gopalan, the film also stars Priya Anand, who makes an appearance in the trailer. Her pairing with Nivin is definitely going to be something to watch out for.
