Kanika Kapoor is the sensational voice behind the super hit song Baby doll from Ragini MMS 2. Then she upped the ante by delivering a slew of hits such as Desi look from Ek Paheli-Leela, Lovely and Kamlee from Happy New Year, and Chitthiyaan kalaiyaan in Roy. Kapoor, in an interview to Sayali Parab, talks about being a part of the Mixtape web series by T-Series, her views on the music scene and also hints at upcoming projects
Kanika Kapoor says she was intrigued by the unique concept that Mixtape presented and that’s why she signed up for the track. “I share a close relationship with T-Series, who approached me with this concept. There is so much music being made nowadays, and they have picked a few popular songs and refreshed them by giving them a new voice. The collaboration of a female and male artiste singing together is very cool. It’s a very nice concept and is doing well. T-Series always does well and I am happy to be a part of this project,” she says.
Kapoor will be singing Suit suit karda along with Guru Randhawa for her Mixtape episode. “It is one of my favorite songs and it should be a lot of fun,” she avers.
There’s also a lot more to look forward to, including her new upcoming releases, which will be announced shortly. Without revealing details, Kapoor says, “I have six releases coming out in the next two months. I also have two projects with T-Series that are my singles. Apart from that, I have also sung for two movies. So you will hear more of me in the next few months. Also, I am there in all my videos now.”
On crooning a song for Munna Michael, the vocalist says, “The song has a very Punjabi tadka. It has a new composition. All I can say is that it’s a very Kanika Kapoor song!”
She says she is hoping to make a perfect connection with her young fans by delivering urban- and international-style songs. “Young people today want to listen to urban songs, not too much Bollywood. When I chat with my younger fans, I see they are into the digital space. In the last six months, I have given more space to digital and created more original music and given it an urban and international feel. I think digital is the best way to connect with the young crowd.”
The songstress believes the music industry lacks original songs. “I think there is a lack of new products in the market for the last one year, which is a little annoying. Although I like remixed songs, I would want to listen to fresh songs with new music and compositions. Remixed versions can be done in albums. A few songs were good but it’s become very monotonous.”
Asked why we haven’t heard to her in the last few months, she replies, “There was nothing interesting and I do not regret not being a part of any of those songs. I don’t want to do a song for the heck of doing it.”
Kapoor is all about experimenting with different genres of songs. “People were surprised when they heard me sing Ankhiyaan and Da da dasse as they didn’t realise that I could sing that genre. Now I am going to try different genres. I am doing classical and I am also planning to learn Sufi and, of course, a lot of dance numbers.”
