New Notes

After successfully composing and singing for films like Ms Dhoni: The Untold Story, Airlift, Kapoor & Sons and others, Amaal Mallik is now one of the top composers in the Hindi film industry. The young musician is all set with his next, Noor, which follows the life and misadventures of journalist-writer Noor.

On how he bagged the title track of Noor, Mallik says, “I had previously worked with the producer of Noor, Vikram Malhotra, in Airlift. Even Bhushan Kumar has collaborated with him. And when Noor was conceptualized, I was called and narrated the summary of the story. I have never done a film like this before. I have done biopics and some serious films but never a film that is young and fun. Basically, the music I like to listen has not been offered to me until now. So it was an interesting leap for me, from Airlift and MS Doni: The Untold Story to something new and exciting.”

Admitting he had been yearning to work on something different for a long time, Mallik says Uff yeh Noor has satisfied that craving. It is a blend of rap, hip-hop and electronic. So, 80-per cent of the song has been made with live instruments. Sharing his thoughts on the title track Uff yeh Noor, he says, “Noor, the character played by Sonakshi (Sinha), is very lovable. She is stupid, she is clumsy and the entire thing is a big goof. You feel for her. This song can be interpreted in one of the two ways – Uff yeh Noor could mean ‘Wow this girl…!’ in a good way or it could mean ‘I am tired of this girl!’ That’s the best part about this song.”

On working with the lyricists, the composer reveals, “Usually, we sit together and come up with ideas. Manoj Muntashir prefers to come at the studio and work, while with Kumaar I can jam anywhere, for instance, even in a car. Kumaar has written two songs in this film, which are Gulabi 2.0 and Jise kehte pyaar hai, and two songs have been done by Manoj, and both have a different style of working.”

Mallik says he had probably most fun working on a song called Hai zaroori, penned by Manoj. “It comes in at a point where Noor is broken and she realises some important things about her life. The song depicts a lot of emotion for Noor. Lyrically and vocally, Prakriti Kakar, who has sung this song, did a brilliant job. For that specific song, when it was just a scratch, the whole album fell in place.”

Sharing his thoughts on recreating old songs, Mallik comments, “Recreating songs is trending too much. There are some songs that aren’t done well and that’s where we go wrong. That is why audiences think old songs do not need any new flavor. But I am doing the Gulabi 2.0 (Gulabi aakhen) song and it’s 80-per cent of the original song with new stanzas.”

With new talents flowing into the music industry, how does Mallik keep his music different from the competition? “Everyone has a signature style and I am yet to discover mine. I’m lucky because I have received very different projects to score for, like Kapoor & SonsBaar Baar DekhoAirlift, MS Dhoni: The Untold Story and a film like Noor. I try to make a difference in every movie.”
