After the resounding success of Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani (2009) director Rajkumar Santoshi returns with Phata Poster Nikhla Hero, an action comedy featuring Shahid Kapoor and Ileana D’Cruz. Pritam fresh from the musical success of Yeh Jawaani Hain Deewani, has composed the soundtrack for this film too. The album features six original songs and a couple of remixes.
The opening track Tu mere agal bagal hai is a foot-tapping number sung enthusiastically by Mika. Pritam designs this energetic number along the lines of a festive Carnival song. The lyrics, a fun mesh of English and Hindi words are charming and Mika renders it in his trademark casual drawl, which only adds to the appeal of this lively track. Main rang sharbaton ka (Atif Aslam, Chinmayi Sripaada) has an engaging hook line and the melody, although predictable is sweet. Chinmayi is particularly impressive here. Arijit surprisingly falters in his rendition of the reprise version and sounds flat.
Hey Mr. DJ (Benny Dayal, Shefali Alvares, Shalmali Kholgade) attempts to be a cool club number, which it is to a certain extent but the heavily auto tuned vocals kill the joy. Pritam has to stop using this outdated effect in his dance songs! And the ‘Let’s go bananas’ chorus is plain cheesy. Dhating naach (Nakash Azi, Neha Kakkad) on the other hand is a riot! The fervent mix of desi and western beats coupled with the bambaiya lyrics make this an instantly likeable dance number! Get ready to hear this one blaring out of every Ganpati pandal this season.
Pritam is in his elements in Mere bina tu– a romantic ballad featuring a beautifully understated Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. This stunning soft composition deserves a rewind. Though Atif Aslam and Sunidhi Chauhan shine in their respective versions of Janam janam, this ode to mom ends up a mediocre effort.
The music of Phata Poster Nikhla Hero is fun and filmi and makes for good entertainment!
Verdict: Highly enjoyable
