Roopa Rao’s coming-of-age movie Gantumoote will premiere at the New York Indian Film Festival on May 11. The film has also been nominated for best screenplay at the festival.
Rao came into prominence with her 2016 web series The Other Love Story for which she won the Best Director award at the New York Web Fest 2016.
The story of Gantumoote is about Meera, a teenage girl who thinks that life is like how it is seen in the movies. The film is set in the 1990s. It stars Teju Belawadi, daughter of theatre and stage actor Prakash Belawadi, in the lead. The film focusses on the pressures of academic life, bullying in schools and of course first love.
Gantumoote is the third Kannada film to be screened at the festival in its 18-year history.
