He was awarded for his song Zindagi kuch toh bata (reprise) from Bajrangi Bhaijaan and is being touted as the next big thing on the Indian music scene. A tete-a-tete with singer Jubin Nautiyal
Jubin Nautiyal, whose single Kaabil hoon recently released, has been receiving rave reviews from fans and the industry alike. “Sanjay Gupta is a dear friend and I worked with him in Jazbaa. I did a music video with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan on a song called Bandeya. Since Sanjay is the director of both films, he was familiar with my voice and called me for another song from Kaabil, which has not yet released. It’s a beautiful song. They wanted a certain level of innocence and Sanjay immediately thought of calling me for the rendition. I dubbed for the same and ended up doing three to four songs in the same album.”
He adds, “Sanjay narrated the story to me and Rajesh Roshan sir was also there. I immediately felt a connection with the story. When you have a good brief along with a brilliant director and music director, it becomes a learning experience for you. I learnt how to use my voice in a different way, in a different mood,” says Nautiyal.
On whether he had to prepare for the song, Nautiyal replies, “It was an extremely spontaneous thing for me. I just went ahead and recorded the song. They did not even want to dub it in the studio. It was recorded on the first try itself. It was exactly what they had in mind and I sang it in the exact same way as they expected. There were absolutely no preparations involved.”
On working with a veteran music director like Rajesh Roshan, he adds, “A lot of music directors don’t know what they are doing or what they want in their compositions. Luckily, I didn’t face an issue like this with Rajeshji. He knew exactly what he wanted and I respect him for that. There were times when I was a little hesitant about how I should go ahead with it. I am a voice and the music director envisioned me in a certain way.”
