Singer Lisa Mishra talks to Joanne D’silva about her latest track, The wakhra song, from JudgeMentall Hai Kya, the joy of working with Tanishk Bagchi and Raja Kumari and more
YouTube sensation Lisa Mishra was known for recording cover versions of popular songs. But her life changed once producer Rhea Kapoor discovered her version of Veere Di Wedding’s Tareefan. Soon she flew to India to render a reprise version of the song.
Her latest track is The wakhra song from JudgeMentall Hai Kya which is grabbing a lot of attention. When asked about coming on board the song, she says, “Tanishk Bagchi and I have known each other ever since I released the reprise version of Tareefan. And we always wanted to work together. We were just waiting for the right song and opportunity. So, he sent me a text to come and try this one out. I already loved the song so much; it is one of my favourites. It was just really great that this is the one he had for me to try out.”
Talking about collaborating with Bagchi for the first time, she says, “Working with Tanishk was really awesome as he is very clear about what he wants. He is very focused when it comes to working and does not like wasting time. Also, he is just so very nice. He is somebody who is incredibly responsible about time. He is also very funny and easy to get along with.”
Punjabi vocalist Navv Inder’s Wakhra swag that released in 2015 became an instant chartbuster. So does Mishra feel any pressure of living up to the original track? “Of course, I felt the pressure of living up to the original because there are so many people, including myself, who love the original Wakhra swag. I hope we did justice and I hope it has come out great. It is really cool to have a female rap on this and the female verse on it gives a new perspective very familiar and well-loved song,” comes her reply.
The song marks her first collaboration with rapper Raja Kumari too. “It was awesome working with Raja Kumari because she and I are very close friends. So, when we got to know that we were going to sing a song together, we were really very excited and we have never collaborated before. We have always talked about collaborating and I could not be very happier working on The wakhra song together.”
Mishra says that Kangana Ranaut is her favourite actress. “I was so excited to sing for Kangana because she is one of my favourite actresses. Rajkummar Rao is also one of the finest actors in the industry, so to croon a song for their film was an honour.”
Hinting at her upcoming projects, she says, “I have a lot of projects coming out in the next five months. I am very excited to have people to listen to these songs that we have worked on for so long. Some of them are films and my next one is non-film. I was really excited about the success of Sajna ve and so I am all set to release another independent music piece.”
