Here are some low-profile gems of 2012 that begged to be heard some more
2012 has been the year of item numbers – Chikni chameli (Agneepath), Halkat jawani (Heroine), Fevicol se (Dabangg 2), Anarkali disco chali (Housefull 2), Dreamum wakepum (Aiyya), Disco deewane (SOTY) etc. Interestingly, the year also saw some outstanding melodies in films such as Barfi!, Cocktail, Talaash, Jism 2, Ishaqzaade and Jannat 2. But there were a few remarkable numbers that were lost amid these glitzy, high-profile tracks.
Here, we take a look at three underrated songs that should have been heard more often this year.
Vishal-Shekar composed this gem for Dibakar Banerjee’s political thriller Shanghai. Nestled between loud songs like Bharat mata and Imported kamariya, Dua is a wonderfully mellow and melancholic composition. The composers, who introduced Nandini Srikar last year with Bhare naina (RA.One), repeat her in what is easily one of their best songs. Srikar is mesmerising in her rendition of this evocative track. Hers is a remarkable classical voice that needs to be heard more often. Arijit Singh plays superb second lead to Srikar, and Shekar’s chorus adds to the somber mood of the song. Brilliant!
Ik Bagal (Gangs of Wasseypur)
Piyush Mishra wrote, composed and rendered this breathtakingly haunting number from Anurag Kashyap’s gore-filled tale of vendetta. This gloomy number is reminiscent of the stirring, soulful songs of the ’60s. The retro-style arrangement is minimal with only the flute and sitar featuring prominently. That, combined with strong lyrics and Mishra’s rustic, poignant vocals, gives the song its super-powerful impact. Just the kind of melody that will stir your emotions.
Piya Tu (Kahaani)
Vishal-Shekar have done some exemplary work this year and their soundtrack for Kahaani is a brilliant testimony to their versatility. While Usha Uthup’s ode to Kolkatta, Aami shotti bolchi and Big B’s Ekla chalo became instantly popular, the album also featured the mind-blowing Piya tu. Pakistani singer Javed Bashir is fabulous, adding soul to his alaaps and making his rendition instantly memorable. His voice complements the aggressive guitar riffs, pulsating tabla beats and the haunting manjeera sounds, thus creating one of the most potent classical fusion tracks of the year.
Verdict: Frothy and fun!
