The trailer of Pavel’s Rosogolla is out. It gives us a sneak peek during the era of the Bengali Renaissance. It starts off with a sketch of a quintessential Bengali countryside and the sound of a conch shell, which immediately hits home. “I will not only invent the sweet… but also discover the path,” the protagonist says, that encapsulates the film the in a nutshell. The trailer promises generous doses of smiles and tears, and will serve as a happy ride for all rosogolla lovers.
Set against the backdrop of 19th century Bengal, it is a fictionalized biopic based on the life of Nabin Chandra Das, the inventor of the popular Bengali sweet, rosogolla. For all those who are interested, here is a tidbit for you: rosogolla is a round syrupy sweet made from Indian cottage cheese that originated in East India many years ago. It earned the GI tag a year back.
The film details the journey of the dessert pioneer who sets out to concoct a new sweet to win over his wife, Khirodmoni. After facing multiple obstacles, he finally emerges victorious and rises to eminence. The film marks the debut of Abantika and National Award winning Bengali filmmaker Kaushik Ganguly and actress Churni Ganguly’s son, Ujaan Ganguly. The film also features critically acclaimed actors like Ashutosh Rana, Kharaj Mukherjee, Kaushik Sen, Aparajita Auddy, Chiranjeet, Rajatava Dutta and Bidipta Chakraborty. Subhashree Ganguly will be seen essaying the role of a courtesan.
Rosogolla, that marks Pavel’s second directorial outing after the 2015 film Babar Naam Gandhiji, is slated for a release on December 21, 2018. The film is produced by Nandita Roy and Shiboprosad Mukherjee under their banner, Windows Production. Kalikaprasad Bhattacharjee has composed the music.
