It was a star-studded affair at the launch of the first look launch of Department on Monday. Attending the event was the film’s director, Ram Gopal Varma, and lead actors Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt and Rana Daggubati. Here’s what they said about the movie, which will release on May 18.
I play a character called Sarjerao Gaikwad, who is a gangster and later becomes a politician. He is a corrupt politician. It’s quite an interesting character because my voice in the movie is totally different. I have deliberately used a raspy voice for my character.
Working with Ram Gopal Varma again
Ram Gopal Varma has a spark. I always like the scripts he brings me because he always creates something new for me, whether it’s Sarkar, Nishabd and now Department. I like the way he makes films, so maybe that’s why you always watch me in his films
I am playing a character that I’ve never played before. I play the role of Inspector Mahadev Bhosle, the leader of an encounter squad. He wants to change the system by finishing the gangsters. The film is even more interesting because I share screen space with Bachchan Sir.
Dutt on the song Thodi Si Jo Pee Li Hain
No one can dance like Amitji. I feel I am lucky to get this song. It is an iconic song. You can’t even compare it with what Amitji has done.
Rana Daggubati on replacing Abhishek Bachchan
There was no pressure. When Ramu approached me, he said he was looking for someone who could suit the character. I play Shivnarayan, an encounter specialist who works with Mahadev Bhosle (Sanjay Dutt). But his way of working is different from others. Also, Abhishek is a very good friend of mine and there was no pressure. Actually, I had great fun while working with Sanju baba and Bachchan ji.
This character ignited a different spark because I have some nice scenes with Bachchan ji and the dialogue is really good.
Captain of the ship: Ram Gopal Varma
Department was a very interesting subject and I always wanted to work on encounter specialists. And finally I got the script. Casting Amitabh Bachchan and Sanjay Dutt together was like setting a house on fire. They are both sincere actors who give much more than what you expect. Rana too is a great soul. He has done a great job in this film.
