What’s It All About?

Established in 1997, the Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF) is hosted by an NGO, to develop and encourage African culture. ZIFF is known for screening African films, music, art and design from across the world. The nine-day film festival offers a screening of local and international cinema, music and performing arts, discussion panels, workshops and exhibitions.

INDIAN CONNECT

For its 19th edition, ZIFF has selected two Indian short films – Leeches and Syaahi. Payal Sethi’s directorialLeeches is the story of 16-year-old Raisa, who lives on the brink of poverty with her ammi and three younger sisters in the old city of Hyderabad. In order to save one of her younger sisters from becoming a one-day bride, Raisa hatches a dangerous and improbable plan.

Syaahi, written and directed by Varun Tandon, is a recipient of the 63rd National Award in the Special Jury Mention category. The story revolves around a young boy from a quaint, hilly town. The film is based on the idea that everything that can go wrong, will go wrong, but that is exactly what metamorphosis needs.
